Short Bio
Raphael, born Raffaello Sanzio on April 6, 1483, in Urbino, Italy, and passing on April 6, 1520, in Rome, Italy, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Celebrated for his clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur, Raphael is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome.
His work is admired for its harmony and balance, qualities that became a hallmark of the Renaissance artistic tradition. Raphael's influence was widespread during his own life and has remained significant in the art world for centuries. Alongside Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period.
