Short Bio

Vincent van Gogh, born March 30, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands, and passing on July 29, 1890, in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, was a Dutch post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion, and color, highly influenced 20th-century art.

He created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. Van Gogh's pieces include landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits, characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Despite his mental illness and a lifetime of financial struggles, receiving little recognition during his lifetime, van Gogh's art gained widespread acclaim after his death. Today, his works are among the world's most expensive and celebrated paintings, symbolizing the tortured artist's genius and dedication to his craft.
